There is so much online information about family history, and some of the courses offered by universities and other organisations are amazing. But I think there's a real gap in the market for learning all about genealogy and tracing your family history in a small group setting, and that's why I'm offering a beginner's class for anyone interested in the topic starting in January.
Kilmardinny House
Running on Monday evenings from 27th January, the classes will be in Kilmardinny House Arts Centre in Bearsden. Kimardinny is a grand Regency home, which was gifted to the Burgh in the 1960s and now hosts weddings and other events.
My aim for these classes is to keep numbers low, a maximum of 10-12 students per class. This should mean that participants get loads of time to ask questions and share experiences in a way which just isn't possible in a larger group, or online. The last thing I want is me standing at the front talking for an hour - these classes will be interactive and hopefully a lot of fun.
Topics Covered
I'm hoping this course will provide a solid introduction to tracing Scottish family for people who have either never started researching their roots, or who have just dabbled previously. We'll start by looking at some of the main websites and software you can use to record your findings, think about birth, marriage and death records, look at census records and what we can learn from them, before moving into other sources such as land records, directories, and offline records like Poor Law or burial records. We'lll also take a dive into the world of DNA testing and explore Irish records.
